In 1515 King Manuel of #Portugal presented a rhinoceros to the Pope and other precious gifts such as crockery silver and spices. Adorned with green velvet and decorated with flowers, Rhinoceros sailed away from Tagus to Rome.

It is said that the Pope intended to organize a fight between Rhinoceros and an elephant, just like it was in the Caesars times.

Rhinoceros worn such a fame that the King of #France, François the first, covered with glory after the battle of Marignan, wanted at any cost, to see the animal The rhinoceros because of its natural armour, represented according to the King's eyes, a symbol of chivalry.

The meeting took place on the island of If, a little islet beneath Marseilles.

Scientists and curious also wanted to see the beast.
